ORGANIZING YOUR MOVE
In order to make your move smoother, it is best to work out a schedule well in advance of the actual move date.  The better organized you are, the faster and easier your move will be.  If for example, you are going to pack all, or some of your belongings, the earlier you start, the less there will be to pack on the actual day of the move.

Assuming you are going to pack a portion of your belongings, start with those items you use least frequently.  A good place to begin is in the garage or attic.  A general rule of thumb would be to leave the kitchen for last as this is the room that gets the most activity.

For planning purposes, listed below is a schedule outlining the six weeks up to and including your moving date.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
SIX weeks prior to move-out day
CONFIRM YOUR DATE WITH ALTA NYC MOVERS.
Start to assemble your medical, dental and school records.
Notify your insurance agent regarding your relocation plans.
FIVE weeks prior to move-out day
Decide what you are moving with you, putting into storage, selling or giving away.
Determine what you want to pack yourself and what you want us to pack for you.
FOUR weeks prior to move-out day
SIX weeks prior to move-out day
Notify post office, newspapers and magazines regarding your change of address.
Plan a garage sale to dispose of unwanted items.  Make arrangements with charities for pick-ups of donated articles.
THREE weeks prior to move-out day
Make whatever arrangements are necessary for children and or pets.
Dispose of flammable items.
Make arrangements with us to have your vehicle moved.
TWO weeks prior to move-out day
Notify utility companies of service shut-off dates.  Call ahead to have utilities ready at
your new location.
If you have not already started packing those items you do not want us to pack, segregate the items used less frequently and begin to pack them.
THE week prior to move-out day
Put DO NOT LOAD stickers on items you are taking with you.
Confirm travel arrangements.
Pack separately the items you will need until you are unpacked at your new location.
Empty and clean refrigerator and freezer.
Empty your safe deposit box and make sure that all your valuable documents, jewelry,
etc.., are all gathered together and secured in a safe place.
Have a handy list of key phone numbers prepared and readily available.
MOVE-OUT DAY
Make sure that everything you want moved is loaded onto the truck(s).
Leave the house broom-clean..
MOVE-IN DAY
Make sure everything is accounted for.
Have on hand payment for the move.

If you moved to a new town to take a job during 2001, good news. You probably dont have to pay all of the costs. If your employer didnt pick up the tab, Uncle Sam might take care of some of the partial costs.

Which moving expenses are deductible? The moving expense deduction has changed a lot over the years. For 2001, its simple.

General deductions for moving your family and possessions are:

  • Required lodging (but not meals) en route to your new home.
  • Temporary storage of your household goods (up to 30 days).

Qualified moving expenses are treated as an adjustment to income. This means that you can deduct them whether or not you itemize deductions. Youll need file Form 1040 (the long form) and attach Form 3903.

Of course, not all moves are deductible. In order to deduct your moving expenses, you have to meet two tests:

  • Time
You must begin working as a full time employee within 13 weeks of your move, and you must work at least 39 weeks during the 12 months after your move.* And it doesnt matter whether you were transferred by your employer or you took a brand new job. Your move doesnt even have to be ?work-related,? as long as you have a full time job in the new location.

  • Distance
To meet this test, your new job has to be at least 50 miles further from your old home than your old job was. If you didnt have a job before the move, your new job has to be at least 50 miles from your old home.

Two more details.

Your move has to make your commute shorter than it was prior to your move. In other words, the IRS wont allow you to deduct your move if you move further away. Finally, your move must be closely related to the start of your new job. Generally, this means you have to incur and pay your moving expenses within a year of starting the job, unless circumstances prevented you from moving earlier.

Remember, for most taxpayers, expenses are deductible in the year they were paid, regardless of when they were incurred.

What could be better than a tax deduction? How about your employer paying for your move? Many employers will pay some or all of the cost of the move when they transfer an employee to a new area. These payments of qualified moving expenses are excluded from your taxable income and should be noted with a code P in box 12 of your W-2.

But be aware of this: Some employers pay for things that would not be deductible ? possibly because theyre just being nice, but probably because they used to be deductible. If your employer pays for things like the expense of selling your old home, buying a new home, breaking a lease, acquiring a new lease, temporary housing or meals eaten during your move, these amounts must be included in your taxable income. The employer will probably add them to Box 1 of your W-2. But even with the additional tax, it?s a pretty good deal.

*If youre self employed in the new location, you must also work at least 78 weeks during the first 24 months.
